What Is “Storefront” Glass?
Storefront glass and glass facades are glass panel walls designed to let light into a commercial space, make businesses feel bigger and create an aesthetically appealing building design. What is typically referred to as “storefront” glass comes in two types: traditional storefront glass and curtain wall.
Both are made of glass and an aluminum frame, but they differ slightly in execution:
- Traditional storefront glass is the more common of the two systems. Traditional storefront glass facades are rated for installation up to 12-feet high.
- Glass curtain walls are most notable for their height, as glass curtain walls may be more than one story tall. Glass curtain walls are not load-bearing.
Depending on your design preferences and the needs of your business, either option may be right for you. At Glass Doctor, we predominantly service and install traditional storefront glass facades. Contact your local Glass Doctor to learn more about storefront and curtain wall services available in your area.
Glass Façade Design and Security Options
Your business and its needs are unique. Whether you’re designing a new storefront, replacing damaged glass or retrofitting to an existing building, you have options.
Glass storefronts are typically built using large panels of glass. Typically, safety glass is installed where it is within 24” of a door and 18” of the floor, depending on local code requirements.
Depending on the needs of your business, our technicians may recommend you consider installing:
- Insulated glass units (IGUs)
- Bullet resistant glass
- Tinted glass
- Patterned glass
Some of these choices are aesthetic, while others are for the safety of your clients and employees. Additional consideration is given to businesses that operate in hurricane or other storm-prone regions.
Glass Storefronts vs. Doors and Windows
A glass door and a bank of windows does not equate to a glass facade. While a bank of windows may seem like a less expensive and attractive solution, there’s no substitute for a true glass storefront. Windows and doors just can’t make the same kind of grand impression on customers or let in the kind of light needed to invigorate a space.
