Uh-Oh, There’s Moisture Between My Windowpanes
It's common to notice water droplets or condensation on the outside of your windows. (You might even notice this on the interior of your windows from time to time and this shouldn’t cause much worry beyond lowering your indoor humidity.) But moisture between your windowpanes is an issue that signals a problem with the structural integrity of your window – and requires professional repair.

Why Is There Moisture Between My Windowpanes?
Double pane windows, insulated glass units (IGUs), triple pane windows and thermopane windows are all terms for modern windows with enhanced insulation properties. Unlike single pane windows, these windows are made up of two or more pieces of glass spaced to a specific width with air or gas in between to provide insulation. Double pane windows are twice as effective as single pane windows at retaining heat in winter and cool air in the summer.
Double pane windows are sealed during manufacturing to prevent moisture between the panes and provide increased insulation. The spacer between the panes may be filled with a desiccant (a moisture-absorbing material) to keep the space in between the panes dry. Sometimes, the spaces between panes are also filled with argon or krypton gas to provide even better insulation.
When the seal around these panes fails, fresh air (containing moisture) leaks into the space between the panes where it condenses. The result is a milky appearance on the inside of the window.
Condensation Signals Seal Failure
When condensation appears between panes it signals that the IGU is no longer working. This most often means that the seal is no longer airtight – though the issue may also be caused by a hairline fracture in the glass.
How to Get Rid of Condensation Between Double Pane Windows
It's unlikely that a condensation-laden IGU is "fixable." While some may suggest that condensation can be cleared by drilling small holes into a pane and filling it with desiccant, it's more effective to replace the whole glass unit.
At Glass Doctor®, we specialize in IGU replacement. When you hire your local Glass Doctor, your leaking IGUs will be measured and replaced in a timely fashion and at a fair price, without having to replace the entire window. The new unit will be sealed and warrantied to prevent future condensation problems.
