How to Remove a Plate-Glass Mirror

You may think you can easily remove a plate-glass mirror without much direction, but it can prove to be a challenging task.

Read this step-by-step guide to learn how to remove a plate-glass mirror and when you should call in a professional for assistance in removing larger glass mirrors.

How to Remove a Plate-Glass Mirror

Without the proper safety knowledge and techniques, removing a plate-glass mirror can be a difficult process. When handling glass, it’s important to take the necessary safety precautions to avoid shattering the mirror and getting injured.

Glass mirrors are typically pretty heavy, so it can be difficult to remove the glass on your own. If you’re unsure whether you can safely remove the glass, call in a certified professional for assistance.

If you feel confident you can remove a plate glass mirror on your own, follow these steps:

  1. Cover the mirror with tape—Apply painter’s tape or heavy-duty tape to the mirror as a precaution against the glass cracking or shattering. You should also cover any appliances with a blanket to prevent debris from falling on them.
  2. Put protective gloves on—Protect your hands and avoid cutting yourself by wearing gloves.
  3. Break up the glue behind the mirror—Since most mirrors are glued pretty heavily to the wall behind them, use a piano wire that spans the width of the mirror and slowly move it back and forth to loosen the glue. If you can’t get the piano wire behind the glass, use a putty knife to gently pull the mirror away from the wall.
  4. Move the piano wire back and forth—Once you’re able to get the wire behind the mirror, saw back and forth in a downward motion, keeping the wire close to the wall.
  5. Hold up the top part of the mirror—When you get near to the bottom of the mirror, either you or a friend should hold the top of the mirror to prevent it from crashing over.
  6. Remove the mirror—You should be able to gently pull the mirror off of the wall after separating the glue.
