Types of Glass Railings
It may come as a surprise, but glass railings are usually much safer than traditional railing choices. They are difficult for children to climb and don’t have slats or rails where kids or pets can get stuck. Further, they do not rot like wood or rust like some metals, so they require less maintenance.
We offer two types: framed and frameless glass railings. Learn about each one below.
Framed Glass Railings
Framed glass railings are fully framed with aluminum or stainless steel, with metal pillars between panels for structure and a modern appearance. The panels in framed railings are made of tempered glass (at least 1/4 inch thick) using a heating treatment process to strengthen it. These glass railings are typically used outside.
Frameless Glass Railings
As the name suggests, frameless glass railings don’t have a full frame for a more transparent, unobstructed view. The panels are usually supported by a baseboard, brackets, and a railing bar — and must have a much thicker glass (9/16”) than what’s required for framed railings.
These railings are made of laminated glass and are usually used indoors.
Glass Railing Specifications
Glass Doctor installs glass railings that meet local building codes. This means that commercial railings must be at least 42 inches high while residential ones should be between 36 and 42 inches.
Our railings are made of a series of bolt clamps, metal supports, metal channels, and laminated or tempered glass panels for increased safety and durability.
Laminated glass is perfect for indoor glass railings because of its sturdiness and protection. It comes in clear, patterned, and tinted glass options. Tempered glass, on the other hand, is a safer option for the outdoors because of how the glass is heat-treated to withstand tough weather conditions.
