Windshield Repair for Chips

Windshield chips are a common but irritating type of damage. They are especially prevalent in the Lynnwood area, where ice chunks and rocks from nearby hills regularly find their way onto the road.

Though the damage may seem easy to ignore, a small chip can quickly worsen if left alone. In fact, a chip can spread, creating larger cracks that require complete windshield replacement. In worst-case scenarios, chips can make your windshield more likely to break completely if it sustains another impact.

As dangerous as these windshield chips are, there’s good news. Glass Doctor of Lynnwood can repair your chipped windshield quickly and effectively. We can even carry out mobile windshield repairs that allow us to show up at your house and fix it there.

Repairing vs. Replacing Your Windshield

Choosing between repair and replacement for your windshield is actually quite simple. It all comes down to the size and type of damage. A windshield with a chip smaller than one inch in diameter can be repaired. If the chip is larger than one and a half inches in diameter, you need to replace the windshield. Any deep or spider web cracks also require windshield replacement.

When you work with us, our service experts will assess the strength of your windshield, and recommend the best solution for your damage.

Windshield Replacement

If you have a chip bigger than one and a half inches, or a large crack, our team will recommend replacement. During this process, our experts will remove your damaged windshield and use specialized tools to place the new one perfectly.

Our replacement process also includes Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) calibration. These systems, which include nearby car detection, lane detection, and other alert-based driving assistance systems, are directly tied to a camera in your windshield. When you replace the windshield, the camera needs to be recalibrated. We’ll adjust the camera as needed and test it to make sure your ADAS works.

Glass Doctor of Lynnwood Windshield Protection Plan

Whenever we replace your windshield, we automatically enroll you in our 12-month Windshield Protection Plan. If you sustain any windshield chips or cracks within 12 months of your installation date, simply bring it back to us and we’ll repair it for you without charging for materials.

Windshield Repair and Replacement FAQs

Why can’t a cracked windshield be repaired?

A deeply cracked windshield cannot be repaired because it is impossible to restore the structural integrity of the glass. Once a crack in the windshield penetrates through all glass layers, the crack will continue to worsen, even when resins and glues are applied to it.

Cracks exceeding a length of three inches also can’t be repaired because they affect the driver’s ability to see. The compounds used to restore a chipped windshield are mostly clear but not entirely. If these materials were applied to a large area, it would create a slightly darker area on the windshield. While this may not sound like a major problem, anything that could distract the driver by obscuring their vision makes for an unsafe driving experience.

If your windshield was recently damaged and you’re not sure if it can be repaired or not, here’s a good rule of thumb to follow. Chips that are small enough to be covered by a quarter can almost always be repaired. Anything that cannot be covered by a dollar bill is too large to fix and will require professional replacement.
