The Size of the Damage
Generally speaking, cracks longer than three inches and chips wider than 3/8 inch usually cannot be repaired and require a full replacement.
The Age of the Damage
As a crack or chip lingers, it collects dirt. This buildup can make it impossible to properly clean the damage for a repair, making a replacement the only option.
The Location of the Damage
When a crack splinters to the edge of a windshield, it compromises the structural integrity of the glass, mandating a replacement. If any damage is in your line of sight, then you will need a replacement. Windshield repair leaves some visual distortion, which can be distracting.
