Windshield Repair and Replacement
If you notice any cracks or chips in your windshield, you should repair or replace the glass as soon as possible to avoid further damage. Cracks more than 3 inches can even lead to structural problems, putting the safety of your and your occupants at risks.
Do You Need Your Windshield Repaired or Replaced?
At Glass Doctor® of Greater New Orleans, we offer both windshield repair and windshield replacement services. By taking into account the size and location of the damage, we decide which would be the better option for you:
Size of damage. As a general rule, chips larger than a quarter and cracks longer than three inches require the replacement of your windshield.
Location. Cracks reaching to the edge of the glass are likely to expand over time and therefore mandate replacement of your windshield, regardless of their size. You should also consider replacement if a chip is in your line of sight, as repairs can leave a mark on the glass and obscure your vision while driving.
If the damage to your windshield is slight, there are several advantages to receiving a windshield repair over replacement.
- The entire repair procedure typically takes no more than one hour.
- Repairs are less expensive than replacements and many customers find that they are able to pay for the servicing using their auto insurance. Your insurance company will likely cover the deductible of your repair.
- Repairing your windshield is the environmentally responsible choice, as it prevents the need to dispose of a large piece of glass.
Windshield repair involves removing dust and dirt from the crack or chip, sometimes with the use of a drill. Our specialists then inject resin into the damaged area and then cure and polish the resin to create a clear finish.
If you are looking to receive a windshield repair service, contact at Glass Doctor of Greater New Orleans as soon as possible. Leaving damage unattended for too long can cause dirt to build up in the crack or chip. If it becomes too difficult to carry out a repair, you may end up requiring a replacement.
Sometimes a windshield replacement is your only option to maintain safety in your car; for instance, a windshield with significant damage may compromise the agricultural strength of a roof in rollover accident.
At Glass Doctor of Greater New Orleans, we follow a windshield replacement procedure recommended by the Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC). Our specialists begin by removing the windshield, taking care to avoid damage to the paint and bonding surface. We then replace the piece with a windshield that meets the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) quality standards and apply AGSC-approved adhesive to the glass. You will be able to use your car one hour after the replacement is complete.
If you experience any damage to your windshield within 12 months of the replacement, we will provide you with a free repair or replacement service.
