The Importance of Auto Glass Care

Ensuring that your vehicles are in proper working order keeps your family safe. If auto glass care is neglected, the time spent shuttling to and from work, school, and social activities exposes your passengers to unnecessary risk. Glass Doctor® of Langley performs certified auto glass care service that removes driving hazards associated with damaged windows and windshields. We conduct repairs, replacements, and custom improvements that offer superior injury protection for your family.

Auto Glass 101

Since vehicles travel at certain speeds and are subject to normal road hazards, the glass utilized for the windshield and windows must meet specific safety regulations. Essentially, it is designed to reduce the likelihood of injury in the event of an accident, and maintain its structural integrity at high speeds. Two types of specialty glass are employed to enhance the safety of your vehicle.

Tempered Glass

The tempering process strengths the side and rear windows, making them approximately four times stronger than ordinary (annealed) glass. The piece is subjected to intensive heat, while a controlled cooling process is used on the surface. It is this “quenching” process that causes the outer surface to compress, creating sturdier glass that breaks into small, safe chunks, rather than dangerous shards.

Laminated Glass

Vehicle windshields are constructed of laminated glass. Unlike tempered glass, laminated glass is actually layered. Layers of glass are fused together with an additional layer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB), or a similar vinyl substance. This prevents the glass from breaking into pieces and provides structural strength to the entire vehicle. Typically, one of the layers glass will break while the vinyl fused layer retains its shape. According to the Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC), during a rollover incident, the windshield is responsible for up to 60% of cabin integrity and 45% during other types of collisions.

Ensuring Passenger Safety

To maintain the safety of your passengers, glass damages should be repaired or replaced as soon as possible. Small cracks and chips weaken the comprehensive strength of the pane, and because of the stressful conditions of driving and changes in weather, they have the ability to unexpectedly become worse, creating a driving hazard. For example, a small crack has the power to spread across your entire windshield if temperatures drop suddenly overnight. We provide on-site repairs to windshields that reestablish the structural integrity of the glass.
