What Is Insulated Glass?
Glass Doctor of Portland offers several different kinds of insulated glass units, yet all of them are built and work in similar ways. Essentially, an insulated glass unit consists of two or more sheets of glass with a layer of air space between them. This space is sealed with an insulating spacer, which is filled with a moisture absorbent material. This creates a pocket of air that is trap between the panes of glass, creating a pillow of insulation. Sealant is applied to the edges of the glass to prevent condensation or debris from entering the air space, and occasionally krypton or argon gas is added to further improve insulation.
Benefits of Insulated Glass
Upgrading your windows from ordinary to insulated glass is hugely beneficial for your home in several ways. IGUs work to:
- Balance temperatures within the home regardless of season - allowing for a calm, comfortable environment.
- Boost energy efficiency, meaning you’ll save money on energy bills.
- Provide stronger, tougher protection than ordinary glass.
- Add significant value to your home.
Repair & Replacement of Double Pane Windows
The reason IG units fail is usually due to an issue with the sealant that holds the unit together. If your double pane windows have a milky or cloudy appearance forming between the panes of glass, it is a sign that the window is damaged. When damage occurs around the edges of the unit or the sealant is broken, air from the environment enters the space between the glass, causing condensation and moisture accumulation to occur.
Glass Doctor of Portland offers various glass window repair and replacement services. We replace the panes rather than the entire window, which saves you money and extends the life of your windows. Pane replacement is an excellent window repair that is efficient and effective. If your home windows have suffered damage, get in touch with our specialists for a free in-home consultation.
