Double Pane Windows

When insulated glass units (IGUs) are working properly, they prevent outdoor temperature swings from affecting the comfort of your home. Good windows stop costly air leaks from forcing your heating and cooling system to work harder, and intact units block the transfer of heat so your climate controlled air stays indoors where it belongs. Glass Doctor®of Tampa Bay specializes in all types of window glass services, including double pane window install and replacement.

How Double Pane Windows Work

double pane window

An insulated glass unit (IGU) is made from at least two panes of glass that are separated by an insulating spacer. The space between the glass is filled with air that acts as buffer to outdoor temperature changes. Some units have the space filled with argon or krypton glass to boost the insulating properties of the window. The entire unit is then sealed with a high-grade sealant to secure the panes and efficiency.

Signs of Pane Trouble

When your IGUs are not working properly, they take on an unsightly appearance and they are no longer able to keep your interior comfortable. If you notice fog or condensation building up on the inside of the glass, this is a sign that the seal has been broken and the unit is not providing insulation any longer. Small cracks might not seem like a problem. However, once the interior air space has been breached, your windows cannot provide energy saving functions and a replacement is necessary to restore energy efficiency.
