Double Pane Windows

As the seasons change, your home is exposed to varying temperature extremes. Your home's windows take a load of this harsh weather, wearing them down. A common issue that extreme weather causes to windows is a damaged seal. When a window is improperly sealed, it lets outside air in and allows climate-controlled air to escape. This causes your home's heating and cooling system to work less efficiently, reducing its ability to maintain a steady temperature and increasing your energy bill. These problems will occur due to broken seals in both single and double pane windows. Your Glass Doctor® of Oxford, MI, provides insulated glass units (IGUs), commonly known as double or triple pane windows, services you need to keep your home comfortable and your energy bill affordable.

Broken Window Seals

You don't have to be an expert to identify most broken window seals. If you notice a draft, then you most likely have a broken window seal. For double pane windows, another indicator that your seal is broken is a milky appearance or condensation between the panes.

Double Pane Window Benefits

Although it offers some protection, normal glass doesn't do much to prevent a process known as a thermal exchange, wherein cold or heat energy from the outside passes through the glass to change the temperature in your home. Double pane windows are specially designed to prevent thermal exchanges from occurring. This allows your home's heating and cooling system to use less energy and effort to maintain a steady indoor temperature.

Insulated Glass Unit Design

An IGU consists of two or more panes of glass and insulating spacers in between each pane. The spacer serves as a sealant to keep air out of the space between the glass panes. Spacers can be further enhanced with a special moisture-absorbing material known as a desiccant or warm-edge glass spacers. A special sealant is used to keep the entire perimeter of an IGU permanently sealed. For additional insulation, krypton or argon gas may be added in between the panes.
