Keep Your Outdoor Patio Table Glass from Shattering

Don't buy glass patio furniture that will shatter for no apparent reason. Invest in a patio table with tempered glass built to last. You need sturdy outdoor furniture, and you can't risk broken glass when accidents happen. Tempered glass can be the difference between life and death in some extreme cases. Learn how to prevent shattered glass for your outdoor table.

Is My Outdoor Glass Table Dangerous?

Your outdoor glass patio table may be stain-proof, easy to clean, and resistant to all kinds of weathering, but is the glass safe? Or are they? Glass is not shatter-proof, but there are ways you can protect yourself and your family from easily-shattered glass.

Glass expert, Larry Patterson, says tempered glass can prevent events from becoming catastrophic. You can't control many potential injuries, such as a neighbor throwing a baseball into the kitchen window or an object flying into the sliding glass door or patio table. So how do you ensure these annoying inconveniences don't turn into life-threatening injuries?

Tempered Glass: The Closest You'll Get to Shatter-Proof

According to Patterson, the answer is almost always tempered glass. "Tempered glass is glass that has been heated to around 1100 degrees in a tempering furnace and then quickly cooled with room temperature air. Think of the old pictures of the blacksmith beating on heated steel and then dipping it in cold water. This tempering process strengthens the outer layer of the glass so that it can withstand impact without breaking."

When tempered glass does break, it breaks into much smaller pieces, reducing the chance of injury for people, pets and property. "It’s almost like the glass blows up or explodes," he says.

Tempered Glass Safety Concerns

However, even tempered glass—when manufactured incorrectly—can present safety issues. Experts agree that many glass-shattering dangers result from structural flaws that are made during manufacture or modifications made to the glass after being tempered.

According to Dr. Rick Reidy, a glass expert at the University of North Texas, there are two possible causes of tabletops shattering:

  1. Outdoor glass may shatter due to flaws in the tempering process which, when done properly, can make tempered glass up to four times stronger than ordinary (annealed) glass and will prevent it from breaking into large, more dangerous pieces if it does break.
  2. Some research suggests that the problem may be caused by particles of nickel sulfide trapped within the glass that cause it to crack and then shatter.
